Lunch Lady & the League of Librarians

Plot Summary:
A group of friends who call themselves the “Breakfast Bunch,” are ending their school day when they encounter the librarian who gives them a bad feeling.  They inadvertently listen in on a conversation between a group of the city librarians as they plan to steal fundraising money & they just know they have to go to their trusty Lunch Lady and her assistant, Betty, for help.  Lunch Lady & Betty along with their gadgets come to the rescue in this graphic novel. I guess now we know what those ladies do when they are not serving up lunch.



Analysis:
This is the 2nd in the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series.  In regards to the graphic novel layout, frames are used in varying sizes, sometimes whole page for one frame. Krosoczka asks of the reader to read faster or slow down with the way the frames are done, readers speed up when there are more frames to the page, and slow down and pause when there is only one frame.  Variety of speech bubbles along with bolded text to show emphasis & differentiate the difference in writing/voice. Krosoczka used the colors used are shades of yellow, with black and white on cartoon style illustrations. The backgrounds drawn are not very detailed when drawn in, but they are useful to the reader as they show any setting changes.  The point of view remains the same throughout the story and it is that of the reader being an observer of the story. Lunch Lady IS a superhero and therefore mild violence is present, but it is done so in an exaggerated and cartoony way.

Comics, Comic Strips, & Avatars in the Library

As the popularity of Graphic Novels rises, we as media specialist librarians should use the format of comics to our advantage.  Students already are drawn to them (no pun intended) and using comics, avatars, and graphic novel styles to present information is bound to get their attention. I used several sites and apps to create some that I thought would be helpful for me in my library.  Here are some questions I was able to answer about each. 1. Pixton Evaluation of the site Google Sign-in Teachers can create classes and students can join in class. Not a huge variety of backgrounds on the free version. Reflections of LSSL 5391

I absolutely loved taking this class. I was already comfortable with technology and tried to incorporate it into my library lessons weekly; but this course allowed me to take it a step further. It allowed me to view and use some of the programs and apps in ways I had not before, I also really liked being able to see the ways that other students/my peers used both the same apps/technology I’ve used but differently, and the way they found new apps/technology to complete tasks in similar ways. I enjoyed reading about the ways that they made an app complete a similar task, but  much more efficiently than what I had found.  I am the type of learner that learns best by “doing,” and this class really allowed me to do that.  One fellow classmate shared about “Fotojet Online Graphic Designer” on their “Comics & Cartoons” blog and I liked that they shared about an app similar to ones I used, but this one had different options. I think that sharing in discussion boards and blogs is helpful
