Time Flies

     Well my 1st semester of grad school at SHSU is over and I can't believe it. Time has flown by during this time. I have loved all that I've learned and can't wait for my next set of classes. I'll be taking another 6 hours of coursework during a 10 week session offered during this summer. I was able to get the reading list for one of the classes early, so reviews will be coming soon!

ISBN 978-1-4197-1020-9 Plot Summary: Cece Bell writes a graphic memoir about how she became deaf at 4 years old when she contracted meningitis.  Cece has to learn many things once her meningitis is cured. Once she starts school, she is able to attend a school with other deaf students where she feels normal and part of the group.  Her family has to move and she now has to attend a mainstream school. Being the “new kid” is already hard enough, having a huge hearing aid around your neck isn’t going to make the process any better.  The hardest part for her was feeling accepted and treated like a normal girl even though she is deaf and has to wear a hearing aid. The Lion & The Mouse

Pinkney, J., & Aesop. (2009). The lion & the mouse . New York: Little, Brown and Books for Young Readers.  ISBN 978-0-3160-1356-7 Plot Summary: This retell of Aesop's Fable of The Lion and The Mouse is a mostly wordless one. It tells the tale of a mouse that is caught by the lion. The mouse asks to be let go, and the lion obliges. The Lion is later trapped by poacher’ traps, and the mouse is able to set him free by gnawing at the traps.  The only words used in this book are onomatopoeias. The story leaves us with an illustration of the lion and his family, living with the mouse’s family riding on his back. This version, keeps the same moral/theme of Aesop’s version- No act of kindness, however small is ever wasted. Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning “The UDL Guidelines are a tool used in the implementation of Universal Design for Learning, a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn. ( http://udlguidelines.cast.org/ )”  The tool is a chart that has different means with guidelines and goals for learning. I like the web version of the chart as it is interactive and will take the viewer to pages that give more details and great examples.  A couple of things from the UDL chart that I already do and feel comfortable with are: Means of Representation, Access Guideline 1 Perception. Interact with flexible content that doesn't depend on a single sense like sight, hearing, movement, or touch.
