Videos and QR Codes in the Library

YouTube & VIDEOS
As a media specialist librarian, there are many times that I have to watch videos for examples or how to complete tasks.  I don’t mind watching them, though I do believe if the videos are too long, I lose interest. I would like to create more videos to share with my students to expose them to new things (ie books, apps, etc.) & to teach tasks that will be helpful for students. I found some videos that other libraries made to share with their student population and share a bit about them.

1) Most Helpful
This short video teaching the students on how to log into and see the different parts of the library site. This would be especially helpful for incoming freshmen/transfer students.

2) Possible Student Choice
I think that the video on Freedom to Read would be one that the students like best. It will give them a bit of info on Freedom to Read and Banned Books.

This channel has a lot of videos of student reflections which I think it is great, but the newest videos are 7 years old. It makes me wonder if there was a change in librarian or if the students are still creating videos but sharing them on another platform.

1) Most Helpful
This video that teaches students how to find and use wikimedia commons images for them to use in their work.

2) Possible Student Choice
This video is a student being interviewed about her Passion Project and how she went about it.  I like that the student shares her experience with the Passion Project and believe that other students may be willing to complete a Passion Project of their own based on her reflection.

1) Most Helpful I believe this video to be extremely helpful. Students and staff can get an idea of the different things that they can do when visiting the library!

2) Possible Student Choice
I think that this counselor video could possibly be Student Choice as it offers the viewer information about their counselor in a digital cartoon form.

1) Most Helpful
Media Center Orientation by their media specialist. This was created for incoming 6th grade students, but would also be helpful for any transfer students.  I like that he shares about the schedule, does a small tour and gives a helpful tip for each area.

2) Possible Student Choice
I think this would win the Student Choice. It is a topic that all students deal with, wanting to read a book that someone still has, & Star Wars.  The group of students that created this are very creative.

QR CODES

QR Codes scannable codes that direct the user to information selected by the QR code maker.  They are being used all over the place, including schools, to share things from websites, forms, documents, images, and even videos on the web. Research some ways libraries are using QR codes.  Most smartphones come with an integrated QR code reader in their camera without having to download any additional apps or software. QR codes can be generated with different free sites, I like using https://www.qr-code-generator.com/ because it allows me to enter a large range of items to create the QR code for; from URL, Text, email, sms, Twitter, Facebook, PDF, MP3, coupons, surveys, and even images to link to the QR code.
I have used QR codes to promote information and share with campus.  My plan for this school year was to have book reviews, book talks, and “First Chapter” preview videos made by staff, students, myself, and even guest readers and then creating QR codes for each to then display around my campus to share with my students and staff.  I could take book covers (images or book jackets) and then post the QR code with it. I believe QR codes will allow me to share books and materials with students that may be too shy or embarrassed to ask about a certain book. I also think that it will increase the exposure of the types of books available to my patrons.  Students may be interested in a book that a peer did a book talk on, but may have never picked up the book based on an adult’s recommendation.
I believe QR codes will also be extremely useful once our district/campus goes 1:1 iPads.  (Our district just passed a bond that is set to have all of us be 1:1 by the end of the year next year.) Having QR codes with information, tutorials, and newsletters will allow me to share even more with my patrons.

BOOK TRAILERS

I made a short book trailer on Animoto.  Animoto is an online video making site that allows the users to upload images, videos or use some from their stock.  If you own a iOs device, iphone or ipad, you can do the same thing using iMovie. After using both to create short movies, I believe that iMovie is much more user friendly than Animoto.

Craft, J. (2019). New kid. New York, NY: Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.

"Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds--and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his friends and staying true to himself?"--Provided by publisher.
The book trailer can be found here

NOTE: Animoto does allow the users to upload their video to YouTube. I thought that would be a great way for me to keep my book trailers together and then create more to later share with my students. Shortly after posting it on YouTube, I got an email stating YouTube Community reviewed my video and actually deleted it from their platform. I am doing more research on why my video was flagged to violate the “Spam, Deceptive Practices, & Spams Policy.”

  1. Great book trailer! I have been wanting to read that one. It's weird that your book trailer would be removed from Youtube when I've seen plenty of trailers with similar content.

  2. Thank you for your compliment. I too was (still am) wondering why it was kicked back. The notification said I was spamming, but all I did was give info about the book, if anything I was even vague about it. I don't know. I will have to find other platforms to post book trailers on though.

  3. You did a fantastic job on your trailer! Love it! I really like how you incorporated the video into you trailer along with actually showing pages from the book showing your audience this is a graphic novel! Very well done. I will have to incorporate more videos in the future into what I am doing.

  4. Thank you for giving us your perspective on the different videos. In this age of technology, we have to adapt to what people are utilizing the most, and that is social media, YouTube, and QR codes. QR codes are everywhere! As educators, we need to incorporate the newest technology into an advantage for learning and sharing ideas. Your trailer was amazing!
